Oh Brother

by ChrisandKev @ 2006-05-20 - 01:24:48

Today I meet perhaps the only other person in the UK who does not watch or like Big Brother. Has the whole world gone mad?…are peoples lives some meaningless and boring that they need Big Brother…like a starving man needs a bowl of rice?

What is the fascination with watching a bunch of no talent weirdo’s live in a house?
Why don’t the people watching the show know that they are just encouraging more similar rubbish?

The production companies laugh all the way to the bank, because they make so much money on a show that costs them so little. Perhaps there have been quality TV pilots made and dropped because high-powered TV executives demand more reality shows.

Will the rabid watchers of this drivel be happy when the only shows on TV are reality shows? No more historical dramas..after all they are too expensive and don’t make as much profit…No more award winning nature programs, their audience is ever smaller than the historical drama.

Nearly all the quality programs these days are made in the US not the UK, we have more and more channels filled with repeats or dross. Of course there are exceptions (Dr Who is one of them) but can you name another 6 quality British made programs?

To me watching Big Brother is like being a nosy neighbour and peering through your curtains to see what is going on. Each show the producers play one person off against another, encouraging the contestants to sink to new lows. How far down this road do we go? When is enough …really enough? Should the contestants kill each other to decide who the winner is? I know that sounds far fetched but..if the concept of Big Brother was explained to audiences 20 years ago they would think you were mad.

I've never really seen it, but I think you explained the appeal yourself : 'is like being a nosy neighbour and peering through your curtains to see what is going on. ' That is a very human thing and they appeal to the voyeur in people.

We watched the first series, when the housemates really didn't understand what mass media coverage they were getting - dear old Craig still appears on home makeover shows in his role as chippy. The attention seekers since have left us cold - we glanced at the 2nd series and have made a point of avoiding them since.
Now me, I'm glued to the Strictly Come Dancing/Dance Fever shows. At least they're entertaining as well as voyeuristic.

Farewell Stacey and JP then. But the right 3 couples have made it to the final, ie. the ones who can actually dance the best.

In my opinion- all the contestnats know0 what there getting involved in- they must have seen the other series-I saw with much disgust the opening show- and haven't tuned in sice and don't intend to - never do!- The contestants aren't taken advantage of by the producers and makers- but by there own greed and inflated egos!

No - there's one other who doesn't watch whatever that voyeuristic programme dishes out or others like it - me! I am aware that some sociologists like this kind of manipulative media and give a host of academic 'life' reasons for it to be 'critically'. viewed'

My TV tends to be more off than on these days. I reckon household costs will be reducing by the price of an annual TV licence fee in the not too distant future.

reality tv could not get more unreality now

hope the tv companies realize they have exhausted this genre

first ever series was interesting and novel

now it is a freak show spawning wanabee celebs

(although i must confess i quite like the last celeb big bro with micky barrymore and george galloway)

trashy tv for a ever more trashy world

channel 4 is a top channel though and i am suprised they still are in liason with big bro after all this time...

Because people are nosy. It's like gossip that everyone can get involved with.

Shallow? Yes, but everyone needs nonsense escapism from time to time.

And people knowit's nonsense.

By even debating it, you're giving it more space, more coverage. Don't like? Don't watch.

Try watching Big Brother Nigeria (we are subjected to this cr*p via bloody expensive DSTV daily)! I cannot believe the programme is still running - the first one was bad enough!
