Do You Think Your Sexy?

by ChrisandKev @ 2006-05-12 - 14:18:22

I don’t know about you………but there has definitely been a few times in my life when I felt I didn’t belong. In other words, the people around me have behaved so strangely….I end up wondering whether an Alien invasion had taken place whilst I was asleep. I know, I know……it sounds far-fetched….but what other explanation is there? When so many seemingly normal people do so many boneheaded things.

The phenomenon I wanted to talk about started roughly 2 years ago. Young women began wearing short t-shirts that exposed their tummies. My first few “viewings” were very pleasant because the women in question were both attractive and slim. One morning however…it happened….the scary thing…suddenly overweight young women started to wear the same short t-shirts and I want to know who is to blame?
Who forces me to watch beached whales and wannabe beached whales shake their undulating rolls of sweaty fat as they waddle down the high streets of the UK.

The Suspects

The fashion designer: Oh course they have to bear some of the responsibility for coming up with the design in the first place; however since they always use skinny super models perhaps they couldn’t foresee how their fashionable efforts would be misused.

Mainstream clothing stores: Surely the shops on our high street must take a large share of the blame, after all if certain fashions were only manufactured in smaller sizes then I wouldn’t be writing this article.

Tattoo artists and naval jewellery makers: Obviously these two groups would also gain if their art and jewellery got maximum exposure.

Parents: I’m constantly amazed at how little they seem to know about their teenage children, where they go, who they are with. They give a bunch of clichéd answers when referring to their teenagers…”going through a faze”…..”It’s my daughter’s friends who are the bad influence”… “If I buy her clothes she just wont wear them”.
What a cop out!!! Until the teenager starts work and earns their own money the parents have all the control they need…they should regain control by removing privileges when necessary. Nobody said parenting was easy…sometimes love also involves saying no to stubborn kids and following through.

You: It may be your first opportunity at being socially responsible, for goodness sake don’t let us all down. If your about to step out of your house with a women who should definitely not be showing off their body please…please find a way to break the news to them…. perhaps by screaming in their ear… “Your gonna scare old men with that!”

In summary
If I want to see fat bellies…I can go to a football match….thankyou.

oh how i agree with you, speaking as a 'large' lady with a teenage daughter to boot i can tell you who is to blame - fashion designers and the stores. it is practically impossible for me to get anything that covers me decently and as for our daughter, well, forget it, we have to trail round the shops for hours and she ends up having to buy stuff that is actually too big for her in order to get the cover she wants, we own a kebab shop - i won't put you off your dinner by telling you of the sights we see in there, why oh why do women think its attractive to wear clothes that are too small/too short/too tight, because even if the woman is slim if her clothes are tight/short/small she looks HUGE and its just not pretty.

I agree with Jools. Now my Mum is pretty fit and slim for a woman past her prime by a decade or two, and knows how to make the best of her assets by covering the bits that have gone downhill a bit, but she has to trail from store to store, trying to find clothes that make the slightest allowance for anything, and yet be somewhat stylish. And me - I'm slim enough too, but struggle to get a top that doesn't reveal my total lack of cleavage to the world... where did all the round necklines go?

Thanks for your comments Liz, we hope you will visit us often.
I think you have some valid points about the clothes currently in the high street.

As a man it seems to me that unless a women has a fortune to spend on designer clothes that too many of the modern styles make her look sluttish rather than sexy. For some reason designers think to be sexy you need to be slutty;where as I disagree. A women whose clothes are alluring and feminine are far sexier. I also believe both sexes respond to how people dress and prejudge them accordingly.

For example if I go to a business meeting in a nice suit & silk tie, nice watch, jewellery....I'm treated with respect, spoken to in a deferential manner. But if I go to a business meeting in my old trainers and jeans, no jewellery, then some people might presume I'm part of the building maintenance, or a delivery person etc. So I don't think some of the current styles do women any favours if they want men to be respectful and communicate instead of just grunting at them.

Well, you know what they say, every 18 year old should buy a suit for his first job interview/court appearance...

PS. "Do You Think You're Sexy" would be grammatically correct.

Thanks.......Miss...but the incorrect grammar was intentional.
You see the original idea for the title of the posting was Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? which is a title of an old Rod Stewart song. I decided not to use I'm because my posting is an attempt to get readers to comment and debate about women in short T-shirts. After playing with various connotations I decided if I made the title grammatically correct no one would make the connection to the song, especially since the original title itself was not grammatical.

But you didn't comment on whether you think some designers think it has to be slutty to be sexy?

ahem...if some "incorrect grammar was intentional", what about "naval jewellery"?

I'm not totally sure that I agree with you. I can understand that not everyone suits every 'fashion' but as a man who prefers big women I like the fact that some women feel comfortable enough with their body shape to show it off, I find large women very attractive and sexy and don't think there is anything wrong with them showing off their bodies just as much as any other woman. If the logic of people that do not fit in with the 'norm' of beauty not being allowed to show themselves off is followed to it's conclusion then the majority of people would go around dressed head to toe in sack cloth and some of us may not even venture out of our houses for fear of disgusting the beauty police.

This is a clear example of what is wrong today where a minority view is stuffed down our throats. I don’t believe that the majority of people want to see undulating rolls of sweaty fat on the high streets of the UK. Often these days’ wacko minorities use PC to kidnap and malign the views of the silent majority.

If you want to view fat women then invite them to your party…. but do not call us in the mainstream a police state because we do not share your predilection for lard butts.

It's nice to see that you go with the 'might is right' arguement, just because there's more of you doesn't mean that what you like is right, it's still just what you like. I don't expect everyone to like the same things I do, and I don't think that I have ever stuffed my views down anyone's throats, but that is what you are doing. You are saying that just because you don't like to see large women dressed sexily, then it should never be seen, if that's not a police state then I don't know what is. The mainstream isn't always right, for example for years before the second world war there was a huge anti-semetic feeling among the mainstream of europe and then suddenly when the Nazis came along everyone changed there minds, also if the mainstream always came out on top we would still be living in a world where we belived the world was flat and we would never have gone into space to find out. I'm not saying that I want you to like the same things that I do, but I don't see why you should be allowed to legislate and impose your preferences on what people wear or when and where they wear it. We are all entitled to our views and our individual likes and dislikes, but that doesn't mean that any of them are any more 'right' or important than anybody elses likes and dislikes.

Your comparisons are ridiculous in your argument, but lets deal with each point you have tried to make.

To compare the plight of overweight women with that of the Jews is ridiculous, weight is due to bad eating habits, over indulgence, lack of exercise and denial; It has nothing to do with what ethnicity you are born into.

Personally I could quite happily never see an exposed tummy on the high street again slim or otherwise if that meant overweight women covered them up. Flaunting your fatness is foolishly based on a lie that fat in someway is good for you, its not… It is bad for your health and shortens your life.
To argue otherwise is as ridiculous as saying that smoking is not harmful.

By forcing me to view overweight women baring their tummies you are imposing your views and tastes on the majority. Many of our society’s problems are borne out of trying to accomodate or being dictated to..by a vocal minority. There has been a lowering of morals and in particular shame in western cultures..to what I call the lowest common denominator.

It’s no longer shameful to have a baby out of wedlock; the state will provide….Its no longer shameful to be pregnant at 14. It’s no longer shameful to pee in the street. Shagging someone in a car has become a spectator sport.

But are we a better more compassionate more reasoned… less selfish society because of any of these lowering of morals?
In my opinion the answer is clearly no. That is not to say, I am perfect…far from it…but I strongly believe that society is better served when we at least strive for high morals instead of excusing our over indulgence of sex, drugs or food. As for your ridiculous attempt to tie the flat world theory into your argument…Perhaps if the percentage of obese people in this country continues to rise The world could become flat!!!!!!!!!!!!
